; Purpose
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This file contains last minute instructions and information for the installation
of Dearborn Protocol Adapter 4 Plus and prior DPA versions.

;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; Issues Resolved in 5.51
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Version 5.51 has three issues that have been resolved.

1. International ServiceMaxx and 2007+ J1939-based vehicles. There was an INI
file issue in the DG121032.INI file that caused the J1939 transport protocol
to be handled in the DPA API even when ServiceMaxx requested to handle the
transport layer in their application. This resulted in ServiceMaxx not being
able to see the engine serial number and not being able to connect to the
vehicle automatically, however Users could select the engine manually and the
    application would work properly.

2. Detecting previous DPA installs and prompting the user to uninstall previous
versions of the drivers. Now, when the DPA installs, it will detect a prior
installation and prompt the user to uninstall. Thus, all files, DLL's and
components from prior installations will be removed, resulting in a clean
    installation.

3. Adapter Validation Tool (AVT) and orphaned protocol entry in a Vendor INI file.
Version 1.5 of AVT fixes an issue where if a Vendor INI file had a protocol
that did not have any devices, AVT would display an error and exit. Now,
a protocol with no devices will simply be ignored and not displayed.

; 1: Installing the DPA from the DPA Installation CD
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. Close all running applications.

  2. Insert the DPA Installation CD into your CD drive.
2a. If "autorun" is enabled, the install process should start automatically
and you can skip to instruction 4.

  3. If "autorun" is diabled, run the "DPAInstall.exe" executable manually.
3a. Open "My Computer" and expand your CD-ROM directory path. Double click
on the file "DPAInstall.exe" in the root directory of the CD.

  4. Follow the installation program instructions.

  5. When the setup is complete, it will create a program folder called:

"Dearborn Group Products" -> "DPA 4 Plus"

which can be found under the "Start" -> "Programs" menu. From this
submenu, you can launch the troubleshooting application called "AVT", or
you can read the complete DPA manual or QuickStart guides.

;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; 2: Downloading and Installing from the Internet (www.dgtech.com)
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have the installation CD this step is not required unless newer drivers
and/or software have been released since you first received your unit.

  1. Download the Dearborn Protocol Adapter drivers from the internet.
These can be found at http://www.dgtech.com/ under the support downloads
      page.

  2. Click on the Web page link to download the files to your computer.
This file is a compressed file that contains the complete software
package. It is recommended that the file be saved to a temporary directory
      on your computer (e.g. "C:\TEMP\").

  3. Decompress the file.

  4. Run the file called "DPAInstall.exe".

  5. Follow the installation program instructions as per step 1.

  6. Check to see if a firmware update is required. See section 3.

;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; 3: Updating the Firmware On Your DPA 4 Plus
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your firmware may be out of date and need updating unless you received your DPA
as part of release 3.02 or 5.50. Please refer to the DPA 4 Plus Installation
and User Manual for complete instructions. The manual can be found under the
"Start -> Programs -> Dearborn Group Products -> DPA 4 Plus" menu.

;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; 4: Uninstalling the DPA
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. Launch the "Add or Remove Programs" tool from the Control Panel.

  2. Select "Dearborn Group DG121032 Drivers" and then click the "Change/Remove"
      button and follow the instructions.

;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; 5: Deviations/Clarifications From The RP1210A Standard
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. Multiple clients. The DPA units supported in the DG121032 drivers can
only support one application at a time.

;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; 6: Technical Support

; 7: DPA Warranty Terms and Conditions
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please refer to the DPA 4 Plus Installation and User Manual for a complete
description of the DPA warranty terms and conditions.

;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; 8: FAST_TRANSPORT Option (New to Release 5.50)
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A new option has been added to the DPA as of release 5.50. This option is called
FAST_TRANSPORT. This option can be set using the DG DPA 4 Plus Options program
available under the "Start -> Programs -> Dearborn Group Products -> DPA 4 Plus"
menu.

When this option is in the "On (Default)" position, it significantly decreases
reprogramming and reflashing times over the J1939 data bus by reducing the amount
of time between J1939 transport protocol packets (used to break large messages
into CAN 8-byte packets for transmitting on the data bus). However, with this
option turned on, some PC applications and vehicle controllers may not be able
to keep up with the DPA.

This option has long existed and many OEM and component manufacturers using
the DPA for end of line (EOL) programming stations have used it successfully.
If you encounter a diagnostic or reprogramming/reflashing application that is
having problems with the DPA using the J1939 protocol, we recommend setting
this parameter temporarily to the "Off" position and then retrying the
application.

This parameter makes little, if any, difference during "standard"
diagnostic sessions.

For more detailed information on this parameter, refer to the DPA 4 Plus
Installation and User Manual sections regarding FAST_TRANSPORT.

;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; 9: Silent Install Available for Engineers/Integrators (New to Release 5.50)
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the 5.50 release, DG has introduced a "silent" installation that software
installation engineers can call that will install all DPA files. This includes
manuals, quick start guide, "DPA Options", "DPA Flash Updater", and the
troubleshooting application "Adapter Validation Tool - AVT". All DPA files that
would be installed interactively are installed by the silent installation.

For more detailed information on this topic, refer to the DPA 4 Plus
Installation and User Manual.

;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
; 10: Native Driver Device IDs Now Match RP1210 Device IDs (New to Release 5.50)
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the 5.50 release, DG has decided to change our "native driver" device
identification numbers that are found in the file "C:\Windows\DG_DPA32.INI" to
match our RP1210 device numbers that are found in the file
"C:\Windows\DG121032.INI".

In the past, many OEM customers, especially military contractors, have used our
native drivers to get to protocols not covered under RP1210 (such as GM UART).
Having different device numbers has caused confusion between customers and DG
technical support, therefore the device numbers will now be changed to match.

NOTE: Device 601 (DPA 4 and DPA 4 Plus USB) which has been "hard-coded" by
numerous applications will be supported "under-the-table" and considered an
alias for the RP1210 device number 150. However, we request that in the future
you parse the DG_DPA32.INI file to obtain the correct device ID. These device
numbers, however unlikely, could possibly change between releases!
